The article describes the lack of deaf culture representation and what it means to be deaf in the last century. According to the article, “she had spent her first eighteen years learning how to do what could not have seemed more unnatural: pretending to hear.” The idea that the person has to hide her/his identity puts a lot of pressure on emotional (including brain) and physical health of the individual. “...method had disastrous consequences for my mother’s ability to process and synthesize complex ideas.
